Update 2

February 10, 1999

Back to Home Page

This message is to alert those requesting information about the IAI/UM Summer Institute that the official announcement for the First Institute will be released on, or about, February 15, 1999. People who filled out the form via the Institute WWW requesting further information will receive an e-mail message with detailed
instructions on how to apply for participation in the Institute, eligibility criteria, etc.. The same information will be available at the Institute's WWW site.

I want to take advantage of this update to clarify two items that came up repeatedly in questions from potential applicants.

First, the IAI has established the policy that Institute participants must be affiliated with institutions (academic, research, governmental or non-governmental) from IAI Ratified Member Countries. At present, these countries include: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the USA, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

To those of you from other countries, I thank you for expressing an interest on the Summer Institute, and encourage you to check the Institute's WWW site in July. We expect to make much of the Institute materials (lecture abstracts and visual aids, reading lists, project results) available in near-real time via the Internet.

Secondly, many people have asked if the same topic will be repeated next year. The answer is no. Next year, a different Institute theme will be chosen. Therefore, if you are interested in interannual climate variability and its effects on society, be sure to apply now.

Thank you again for your interest! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail (gpodesta@rsmas.miami.edu) or telephone (1.305.361.4142).

Best regards!

Guillermo Podesta
Institute Science Coordinator
