The Project INSTAR program provides science teachers with innovative geoscience education and technology training focused on coastal marine environments. Participants from Miami-Dade County (Florida) Public Schools [4th largest school district in U.S.] and Charlotte-Mecklenberg (North Carolina) School District have completed the program. The instructional topics, which vary from year to year, include:

    • South Florida Hydrogeology

    • The Dynamic Barrier Island System

    • Coral Reefs and Nearshore Environments

    • Marine Microorganisms

    • Quantifying Marine Animals and their Environments

The goals of INSTAR are to:

    • Improve the quality of geoscience and environmental education in the public schools, especially at the middle school (grades 6-8) level

    • Enhance the professional development of middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12) science teachers by offering current geoscience content, and state-of-the-art training in field methods, laboratory skills, and technology that they can adapt to their classrooms

    • Educate teachers, students, and other residents about South Florida's unique ecosystems

    Funded by:

    • University of Miami - The Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science

    • Miami-Dade County Public Schools

  • GLOBE - Global Learning and Observations to
    Benefit the Environment

    http://www.globe.gov

Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)
is a worldwide network of students, teachers, and scientists working
together to investigate and understand the global environment.

    • The program currently reaches 7,000 schools in 83 countries

    • Students along with their trained teachers collect data on
         1) hydrology
         2) climate
         3) soils
         4) land cover

    • Data collected are posted on the GLOBE webpage

    • Data are accessible to environmental managers, scientists
      and the public

Florida GLOBE International (FGI) is an official GLOBE franchise based in
Miami, Florida. FGI hosts several training sessions for teachers in South
Florida throughout the year, and provides in-country training in
Latin America and the Caribbean. More information is available at:
