The Intra-Americas
Sea Initiative (IASI) is an international, multi-institutional effort
to improve our understanding of the connectivity and societal impacts
of climate variability, oceanography, geology, and ecology in the
Intra-Americas Sea (Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico) and adjacent
regions.
A number of basic and applied research efforts
have been identified that are of importance to the region and can be
funded through existing scientific funding agencies. The primary
goal of IASI is to improve our knowledge base for environmental
management and society-related planning activities. This goal
includes the following specific objectives:
- Improve regional observation and modeling systems, and increase their
accessibility to the wider community
- Facilitate interactions and information exchange among the scientific
community, relevant agencies, and end users (resource managers, educators,
NGOs, activists, developers)
- Participate in capacity-building in countries of the Intra-Americas Sea
(IAS)
The IASI therefore offers this Internet
website, our first "product", to the IAS/LAC community as a central source for
links to regional information and data. The intent is to provide various end
users in the IAS/LAC region withthe following resources to better understand
the physical, ecological and societal forces that influence environmental
resources management and planning:
- Strong mutual links to information and data
- Available and usable tools
- Scientific guidance in use of information and data sources
- Training to develop independent capabilities

La Iniciativa del Mar
Intra- Americano (IMIA) es un esfuerzo internacional de varias instituciones para
mejorar nuestro entendimiento de la conectividad y el impacto social de la
variabilidad del clima, oceanografía, geología, y ecología
del Mar Intra-Americano (el Mar Caribe y el Golfo de Mejico) y zonas adjacentes.
Se han identificado varios estudios
básicos e investigaciones que son de importancia a la región,
que pueden ser financiados a traves de agencias científicas que ya
existen. El objetivo principal de la IMIA es de mejorar nuestro base de
conocimiento para poder mejor controlar el uso del ambiente y mejor planear
actividades relacionadas con la sociedad. Ese objetivo incluye los
siguiente:
- Mejorar las observaciones regionales y los modelos de sistemas, y hacerlas
disponibles a la comunidad
- Facilitar interaciones y el intercambio de información entre la
comunidad cientifica, agencias relevantes, y otros usadores (directores de
recursos, educadores, activistas, organizaciones, desarrolladores, etc.)
- Participar en el dessarrollo de capabilidad en los paises del Mar
Intra-Americano (MIA)
La IMIA ofrece este website, nuestro primer "producto",
a la comunidad del MIA/LAC como un lugar central con acceso a vínculos
de información y datos regionales. La intención es de proveer a
varios usadores en la región MIA/LAC con los siguientes recursos para
mejor entender las forzantes físicas, ecológicas, y societales
que influyen el manejo y planeamiento de los recursos ambientales:
- Vínculos fuertes y mutuos a informacion y datos
- Acceso a servicios
- Ayuda científica en el uso de información y de datos
- Entrenamiento para desarrollar capabilidades independientes
