Coastal and Marine Geology Program at the
USGS
http://marine.usgs.gov
This site
offers overviews of current research programs at this branch of the USGS
and links to scientists
working on nearshore and offshore geological
problems. The synopses may be too technical for K-8,
but the Surveyhas
done a good job of addressing a layperson audience. Two examples of
research are
"Louisiana's Barrier Islands: A Vanishing Resource" and
"Hurricane Impacts on the Coastal Environment".
Coastal Services Center - National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
http://www.csc.noaa.gov/
A
resource directory hosted by NOAA's Coastal Services Center in Charleston,
S.C. The tools are links to
sites on technology or information,
management and policy, and training and outreach. Eight categories
include Barrier Islands & Beaches and Coastal Hazards.
Coasts in Crisis - Center for Coastal Geology,
USGS
http://coastal.er.usgs.gov/learninglab/crisis
This USGS
educational resources site is hosted by the Center for Coastal Geology in
St. Petersburg,
Florida. Information on coral reefs, wetlands, and
hurricanes is available, as well as the opportunity to
"Ask a
Geologist".

guide to marine research resources available through the federally funded
Sea Grant program also
has links to the 29 regional and state programs
in the United States. The "expert.html" page is a
convenient guide to
