Dear Colleague:
The National Oceanographic Committee (CON) of Cuba is delighted to announce that the 5th Congress on Marine Sciences will be held from 4 to 8 December, 2000 at Havana's International Conference Center, Cuba. The meeting is expected to bring together scientists and managers involved in marine sciences, services and technologies as well as educators, sociologists, economists, businessmen, policy-makers and anyone interested in promoting and integrating marine scientific research with sustainable development.

MAIN TOPICS:

  1. Integrated Coastal Zone Management: Concepts and methodologies for integrated management of coastal ecosystems. Environmental Impact Assessment. Maritime tourism as a way of development and its impact on coastal ecosystems. Impact of urban and industrial development on coastal areas. The role of sciences and technologies in coastal zone sustainable development policies.
  2. Marine Resources Management and Conservation of Marine Biodiversity: Current status of and prospects for local and regional fisheries. Examples of the application of the precautionary principle to marine resources exploitation. Projections and prospects for marine fish farming in developing countries. Conservation of marine biodiversity. Marine sciences and technologies applied to the sustainable exploitation of the marine resources.
  3. Ocean Processes and Global Change: Ocean-atmosphere interactions. Circulation patterns and hydrological and hydrochemical regimes. Ocean processes as related to global change. Global change and its influence on marine biodiversity. Ocean processes and its relationship with the marine productivity.
  4. Marine Biotechnology: Projections and prospects for research and development in the field of bioremediation, medicine and energy. Biotechnology for the protection of the marine environment and its resources. Marine bioactive compounds. Marine Biotechnology and the protection of biological diversity.
  5. Marine Mammals: Biological and population studies: design, methodology and results. Systems and methods for the effective handling of marine mammals. Preventive and healing clinical and veterinary attentions. Training techniques and regime of activities.
  6. Marine Aquariology: Thematic and scientific projections. Current and future development. Technological support infrastructure and modern architecture for the development of new life support systems. Current trends and prospects in aquariums.
  7. Marine Environmental Education: Practical experiences in the development and application of new methodologies for marine environmental education. Environmental perception of the society in general and coastal populations in particular. The role of aquariums and museums in marine environmental education and management of biodiversity. Mass media and marine environmental education.

Interested authors may contribute papers on the topics of the above mentioned themes, or may wish to present their contributions to any of the following fields:

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:

Abstracts should be sent to the Organizing Committee via electronic mail or fax before 15 September 2000. The Abstracts should not exceed 250 words using Arial 12 pt. font type and 1.5 line spacing. Abstracts are to be structured as follows: Title (uppercase letters), Main author and co-author(s), Institution, Complete address, city and country, Fax, Email, and summary of content.

Papers accepted for oral presentations will have 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for discussion. Those accepted for poster presentation will have an area of 1.0 m width and 2.0 m height. The Scientific Committee will notify authors of the acceptance of their papers and the form of presentation, without prejudice to the applicant's participation as delegate.

WORKING LANGUAGES:

The working languages at MarCuba'2000 will be Spanish and English.

Students:         $100.00 USD
Companions:     $50.00 USD
The registration fee will be paid directly at the Convention Center at the moment of registration.
