As the Gulf Coast struggles with the consequences of the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, the significant role that coastal zones and oceans play in the overall health of our planet and society has taken center stage. But not only are our oceans a resource for fuel, food and jobs as we have been reminded, there is increasing evidence that they can play a significant role in medicine. Ocean and human health researchers have identified a range of benefits to humans from the world's oceans, and growing evidence suggests that access to the natural environment may improve health and wellbeing, prevent disease and help people recover from illness. This panel will explore how this emerging discipline is translating into new approaches and new opportunities in preventative health care – from out of the blue. Dr. Michael H.
